Juba/Nairobi, November 1, 2016 (SSNA) — The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday dismissed the commanding general of the UN peacekeepers after UN body tasked to investigate July attacks on civilian compound and a site which house UN staff concluded that bad leadership was the contributing factor.

“A lack of leadership on the part of key senior mission personnel culminated in a chaotic and ineffective response to the violence,” the report reads in part.

The dismissal of Kenya’s General, Lt. Gen. Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki, was announced by United Nations Spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

In the document, UN investigative body finds that government troops targeted civilians in a UN camp and its mission personnel in a place called UN House. The report also blames the leadership of peacekeeping mission for failing to take appropriate measures to protect civilians.

UN peacekeepers in South Sudan have in the past accused of not carrying out their duties.

General Johnson Mogoa was appointed in May to head the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

When a UN compound is raided and NGOs staff are raped and killed by government soldiers it shows bad leadership for those assigned to provide security and protection. The General in question has ample time to assess security risks in the light of events unfolding in Juba and should have taken the necessary precautions measures to protect the UN compound which is his responsibilities. For those who think the decision was harsh and unwarranted because the General was appointed in May is a smoked screen. The General was appointed by the UN Secretary General Moon, was on the basis of his experience ( this is not an on the job training assignment). He failed in his duties and needs to be fired, tough luck

The General could have done more as a soldier and a commander he was given he a chance but he failed to take the opportunity.
